CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nearly 50 certified community health workers from all over South Texas came to the Get it D.O.N.E. workshop at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi on Saturday, July 22 to learn about how to combat obesity and diabetes through diet and exercise.

The event, hosted by the Texas A&M Coastal Bend Health Education Center, as part of the Healthy South Texas initiative, featured certified instructors who taught about diabetes, obesity, nutrition and exercise.

“This is a great opportunity for community health workers to learn more about diabetes,” said Delia Martinez, one of the instructors at the workshop. “These professionals will learn the latest information about preventing and treating diabetes and they’ll be able to pass it on to their clients.”

The participants, who came from as far away as Austin, Houston and Eagle Pass, took part in hands-on training by participating in meal planning and exercise.

The event took place at the same time as the 13th Annual Diabetes Conference for health care professionals. Workshop attendees were encouraged to visit exhibitors for the conference.

“The vendors at the diabetes conference are a valuable resource for community health workers because they showcase cutting edge products and services. That information, combined with the education they received, will help all workshop attendees better serve those in need,” Martinez said.
