Diabetic Nephropathy: An Update

Description

Three-hundred fifty million people suffer from type 2 diabetes world wide. This increase in the number of persons living with diabetes has had a major impact on the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). DKD is one of the most frequent comorbidities of diabetes and is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. This educational activity will discuss which outcomes measures best defines optimal care for these patients and will speak to the expectations that the referring physician should have in regards to patient care.

This activity is designed for physicians.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Explain which outcome measures best defines optimal care for diabetics with Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD).
  • Assess when it is time to refer the diabetic patient to a specialist.
  • Recognize the expectations the referring doctor should have about patient care.

head shot of Stephen FademStephen Fadem, MD, FASN is a practicing Houston nephrologist. He received his medical degree from University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and did his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas and MD Anderson Hospital in Houston. He is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.  Dr. Fadem is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Nephrology, diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and a member of the International Society of Nephrology.
